Professional Education Fire Service Leadership Academy

The Fire Service Leadership Academy at the University of Utah, in partnership with the Salt Lake Fire Alliance, offers fire professionals a comprehensive certificate program for learning key skills and techniques for exemplary leadership within the fire service industry.

For those fire professionals who are part of the Officer's Corp or for those poised to get there, this certificate program will help you prepare, improve, or expand your leadership skills and help you gain the professional credentials needed to reach your career goals. The objective of this program is to help fire professionals move from a tactical view to a more strategic, big-picture view.

Two phases make up the Fire Service Leadership Certificate Program. The curriculum for each phase builds on the prior phase to provide a total of 80 contact hours. You must complete both phases to receive certification. We currently offer Level I certification; stay tuned for Level II coming in fall 2007.

Fire Service Leadership Level I teaches participants the foundation for great leadership, the fundamentals of teams of trust, and how to handle the challenging elements of a leadership position.

Fire Service Leadership Level II will kick off with Phase I in December 2007. The Fire Service Leadership Level II Certificate program builds on the skills learned in Level I and addresses the unique educational development needs of fire service professionals who seek to take the next step in expanding their leadership skills and knowledge of global issues that may impact the fire service locally.

Fire Service Leadership Academy Certificate Attainment Requirements and Policy

The Fire Service Leadership Academy was created in partnership with the Salt Lake Valley Fire Alliance to provide a leadership program that is specifically designed for current and emerging leaders within the fire profession. As a leadership development program delivered by the University of Utah, certain requirements exist in order to attain a University of Utah certificate. An Advisory Committee of representatives from the Officer's Corp and Professional Education collaborated and agreed upon the following policy.

Upon completion of two phases of the Academy, fire professionals will attain a University of Utah Certificate of Completion. As professionals, a variety of industry emergencies may arise during the program that may prohibit one from finishing the courses required to attain a Certificate of Completion. In these situations, participants will be given a Certificate of Attendance for the number of hours completed with the following two options to complete the requirements to attain a University of Utah Certificate of Completion. These options are as follows:

Option 1: Participant may attend those classes missed the next time the Academy schedules such class under the Fire Academy. Please keep in mind that each level runs on alternate years, so it may be one and a half years before your needed class runs again. There is no charge for this option, but is based on course and space availability.

Option 2: Participant may elect to make up the missing course(s) by attending a Professional Education course(s) offered by the University of Utah. Professional Education offers a variety of leadership and management courses during regularly scheduled semesters; however, courses may not be the exact course missed during the Academy. Participants may take such courses at a 50% discount off the published tuition fee (material fees not included). Course must be coordinated through the Professional Education department to apply the discount and appropriate credit for the Certificate of Completion.
